Day by day

Day 1: Arrival in Cape Town. The V&A Waterfront is the gentlest start in Cape Town. Children watch seals at the quay, and you stroll along harbour basins and market stalls. Street musicians and a Ferris wheel provide variety. Everything is close together, and the way to dinner is short. Table Mountain forms the backdrop, and the sunset tints the water red.

Day 2: Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden lies on the eastern slope of Table Mountain, with wide lawns for picnics and a treetop walkway that delights children. The paths are partly steep, but buggies make good progress on the main path. In spring the proteas bloom. Take a sun hat and water, and allow enough time for the circuit.

Day 3: Boulders Beach. Boulders Beach is near Simon's Town and belongs to the African penguins. From the wooden boardwalk children watch the animals waddle, and they swim in sheltered coves. Keep your distance, as the birds bite. The water is cool, so a wetsuit top is worthwhile. On the way back you stop in Kalk Bay for fish and chips at the harbour.

Day 4: Two Oceans Aquarium. The Two Oceans Aquarium suits a bad-weather day. Children stand in front of sharks, watch penguins being fed and feel for starfish in the touch pool. In the aquarium the distances are short and covered. Afterwards the Waterfront is right next door, for ice cream and a break. Allow enough time and go before midday, when it is quieter.

Day 5: Table Mountain National Park. Table Mountain National Park is the heart of the nature on offer. Depending on fitness, choose the cable car or a hiking trail, and with small children the ascent by cable car is recommended. At the top there are rocks, rock hyraxes and a panoramic view. The wind can suddenly pick up, so take warm jackets. When there are clouds the cable car does not run, so stay flexible.

Day 6: Cape of Good Hope. The drive to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point Nature Reserve follows coastal roads with a view of the sea. Children look for ostriches, baboons and zebras at the roadside. The funicular takes you to the lighthouse, and the paths are short. Keep food in the car, as baboons grab at bags. Picnic spots with a view invite a lunch break.

Day 7: Farewell to Cape Town. The Museum of Illusions Cape Town is a short item before departure. Children walk through crooked rooms and see themselves doubled in the mirror. Afterwards there is time for a last breakfast with a view of Table Mountain. Pack in good time, and allow an hour's buffer for the drive to the airport, as the motorway can fill up in the morning.
