Day by day

Day 1: Arrival in Paris. The Eiffel Tower is impressive even from afar, and children stop in their tracks. On the Champ de Mars there is lawn for a picnic right in front of it. Plan only a look and a walk today, because the queues at the tower cost patience. A carousel nearby appeals to toddlers. In the evening the tower sparkles on the hour, every hour.

Day 2: Louvre Museum. In the morning the route leads to the Arc de Triomphe, where children count the spiral stairs. In the afternoon the Louvre awaits, which you are better off visiting selectively: the Mona Lisa, Egyptian mummies and statues are enough. Long corridors tire you out, so plan breaks in the courtyard. For smaller children an hour is enough, and then the pyramid beckons for a photo.

Day 3: Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre. Montmartre climbs with steps, but the funicular helps. Up top Sacré-Cœur towers in dazzling white, with street musicians sitting in front. Children like to slide down the steps, so keep them in sight. The Place du Tertre with its painters is right next door. A crêpe from the kiosk rewards the climb.

Day 4: Tuileries Garden. The Musée d'Orsay resides in a railway station and shows Impressionists. Children look for water lilies and dancers. Plan a game: who spots the red hat first? Afterwards the Tuileries Garden opens its paths, with a pond, carousel and chairs. Toy sailing boats for children often change hands there in the warm season.

Day 5: Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris. Notre-Dame stands again on the Île de la Cité, and the flying buttresses and gargoyles are an experience from the outside. Children look for gargoyles and remember Quasimodo. The interior is not always reachable even after advance booking, so look at the facade. On the bank of the Seine you can throw stones and feed ducks.

Day 6: Sainte-Chapelle. In the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont children climb on rocks, cross a suspension bridge and find a cave with a waterfall. This is the counterpoint to the city. In the afternoon the Sainte-Chapelle shines with coloured glass windows, and a short visit is enough. The space is small, so stay calm and speak quietly.

Day 7: Farewell to Paris. The Jardin du Luxembourg is the right farewell: children sail wooden boats in the basin, ride ponies or swing on the playground. Parents find green chairs to sit on. Buy a baguette for the picnic and let the city rest around you once more. Afterwards you take the Metro to the station.
