Day by day
Day 1: Arrival in Rotterdam. Rotterdam Zoo in Blijdorp shows Asian, African and Arctic animals, plus an oceanarium and a children's zoo. Everything lies close together, which shortens the routes for small children. After arriving the park is a gentle start: you can soon leave again, or stay in good spirits and pause as you like.
Day 2: Kijk-Kubus Museum-house. From the Euromast you look all around over harbour, bridges and rooftops, a good view for primary-school children. Next comes the Kijk Kubus house, a furnished cube house by the architect Piet Blom, where children discover slanting walls and small rooms. Both places are brief, so there is time for the playground nearby.
Day 3: Erasmusbrug. The Erasmus Bridge, popularly called the Swan, links the north bank with Kop van Zuid. Walk across on foot and mind the wind, especially with pushchairs. A water bus then takes you across the Maas. Children love boats and bridges, and the short distances make the day easy to plan.
Day 4: Unesco Werelderfgoed Kinderdijk. The Plaswijckpark has playgrounds, a small railway, boat trips and animals, a funfair in green. Then it is on to Kinderdijk, where nineteen windmills stand along the canal and belong to the UNESCO World Heritage. The paths there are flat and ideal for cycling or on foot. A boat trip between the mills crowns the long day.
Day 5: Miniworld Rotterdam. Miniworld Rotterdam shows the city in miniature, with harbour, trains and a day and night simulation. Marvelling and pointing are very likely: children look for cranes, cars and tiny figures. The visit is indoors and therefore also works in rain. Afterwards plan a picnic in the park or a game by the water.
Day 6: Arboretum trompenburg. The Arboretum Trompenburg is a quiet garden with many tree species, ponds and a tea house. Children count ducks and collect leaves. Then it is on to the Oudehaven, the old harbour, where boats lie and the White House, one of the first skyscrapers in Europe, stands. An evening walk by the water rounds off the day.
Day 7: Farewell to Rotterdam. The Kunsthal by Rem Koolhaas is a building of steel and glass that shows changing art, design and photography. A short visit is enough, because the museum park next door offers meadows for romping. From here the way to the station and the journey home is short, so you can leave calmly and nobody has to rush.
