Day by day

Day 1: Arrival in Vancouver. After landing, Stanley Park is the gentlest introduction. Rent bikes or walk the Seawall on foot, and children discover totem poles, seals and small beaches. The path is flat and good for prams. The playground by the water leaves room for an afternoon nap on a blanket. In the evening you eat early, as jet lag makes you tired.

Day 2: Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. The Capilano Suspension Bridge sways far above a river, and children usually dare after three steps and then want to run back. Between the treetops, walkways lead through the rainforest. The afternoon belongs to the Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island, for which you should take the ferry early. If time is short, choose only one of the two places.

Day 3: Canada Place. At Canada Place you recognise the sail-shaped roof and the cruise ships at the pier. Children count the sails and watch seaplanes take off. The promenade is wide and level, so buggies also make good progress. At midday you eat in Gastown or by the water. Plan a quiet hour on the benches with a view of the mountains.

Day 4: Science World. In the morning you reach Queen Elizabeth Park, the highest point in the city area, with gardens, sculptures and a greenhouse full of parrots and tropical plants. The circular path is short. In the afternoon Science World is a magnet for children from toddlers to teenagers, with experiment stations under the silver dome. When it rains it is the most reliable choice.

Day 5: VanDusen Botanical Garden. The VanDusen Botanical Garden is a quiet counterpoint to the previous days. Children follow paths through the hedge maze, see water lilies and look for ducks at the pond. The garden is manageable, and one circuit is easy to do. Pack a picnic and sit down on the lawn. In the evening there is time to gather your strength.

Day 6: Sea to Sky Gondola. With the Sea to Sky Gondola you glide over Howe Sound, and the ride takes only a few minutes. At the top there are short hiking trails and a suspension bridge, and the panorama is magnificent. Back in the city you visit the Vancouver Aquarium, where belugas, otters and starfish fascinate children. A day with two highlights needs a break in a café.

Day 7: Farewell to Vancouver. For the farewell, you ride the glass lift up the Vancouver Lookout. From above, children see the harbour, the beaches and the peaks they visited in the days before. The ascent takes only a short time and fits before departure. Afterwards there is time for a last hot chocolate in a café on the street, before you take the SkyTrain to the airport.
