Why this trip
A Venetian harbour, a lighthouse on the mole and narrow lanes full of cats: Chania on Crete is a small voyage of discovery for children. The old town is car-free, the harbour flat, and pushchairs make good progress. In May and June as well as in September and October it is warm enough for swimming, but not too hot. In the evening the harbour of Chania is the best place for a round of ice cream, when the lights come on and boats pass by.

For swimming, families go to the beaches west of the town, where the water is shallow, and with mask and snorkel you can discover fish. The flight time is around two and a half to three hours, and entry is visa-free.
