Day by day

Day 1: Arrival in Berlin. After landing you go first to the Brandenburg Gate, which you can view in peace from Pariser Platz. The twelve Doric columns and the Quadriga above can be admired even by tired children, because the square is spacious and car-free. After that a short walk until dinner is enough. Let the day end early, the city will still be there for six more days.

Day 2: Potsdamer Platz. Today two places with reunification history are on the list. The East Side Gallery stretches along the Spree as an open-air gallery, children discover the murals picture by picture and ask questions about the divided city. Later comes Potsdamer Platz, where glass facades and squares leave room to run. Include an ice cream on the promenade in your lunch break.

Day 3: Berlin TV Tower. The television tower at Alexanderplatz is the anchor of the day. From the viewing level at around 200 metres, children make out the Spree, Museum Island and Tiergarten from a bird's-eye view and look for the places of the previous days. Book the ascent online the evening before so you do not stand in the queue for long. Below, the Marienviertel awaits with fountains and benches.

Day 4: Berlin Cathedral. Berlin Cathedral stands on Museum Island, and primary-school children marvel at the dome and the many organ pipes. Climb the dome stairs only with sure-footed children. The Lustgarten in front is good for a snack on the grass. In the afternoon you go to the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse, where you can explain the death strip to teenagers at the original site.

Day 5: Tiergarten. In the Tiergarten you have a free day to catch your breath. Along the paths cyclists, joggers and squirrels cross, on the Neuer See families hire rowing boats, and the Victory Column serves as orientation. Pack a picnic and a ball, the meadows are big enough for any game. Whoever still has energy visits the zoo at the edge of the park.

Day 6: Friedrichstadt-Palast. If you have strong nerves, visit the Berlin Dungeon, a spooky show with actors in dark rooms. For younger children it is usually too intense, so decide according to temperament. In the evening the Friedrichstadt-Palast presents a revue with dance, light and costumes that also thrills children with staying power. Sleep in in the morning, the evening will be long.

Day 7: Farewell to Berlin. For the farewell a detour to The Upside Down Berlin is worthwhile, a house in which furniture seems to stick to the ceiling. Children crawl through twisted rooms, and you take the funniest photos of the trip. Afterwards there is time for a breakfast coffee and a last stroll, before you set off for the airport or main station. Allow a generous buffer for the journey.
