Day by day

Day 1: Arrival in Munich. Marienplatz greets you with the New Town Hall and its glockenspiel, which children follow open-mouthed. The pedestrian zone all around is car-free, and you stroll without haste between the pretzel stand and toy shops. After the journey a short walk, dinner in a traditional inn and an early night are enough. Tomorrow will be a longer outing.

Day 2: Neuschwanstein Castle. In the morning you take a brief look into the Hofbräuhaus, where the atmosphere works even with lemonade and pretzels. Then it is by train to Füssen and Neuschwanstein Castle. The way up is steep, so plan for the bus or horse-drawn carriage if toddlers are with you. The tour lasts just under an hour, so take water and snacks and start early.

Day 3: Olympiapark München. In the Olympiapark the day stays outdoors. The meadows around the Olympic Lake invite you to run, children roll down hills or look at the tent roofs from the stadium. The Sea Life Centre offers a dry alternative in rain. Take sun cream, because shade is scarce. At the end you ride comfortably back by U-Bahn.

Day 4: English Garden. In the morning the BMW Museum attracts car fans, with gleaming bodywork and engines behind glass. Younger children stay engaged there for an hour at most. Afterwards the English Garden awaits with meadows, streams and the Seehaus on the Kleinhesseloher See, where you can hire pedal boats. In the beer garden children may romp on the playground while you stay seated.

Day 5: Deutsches Museum. The Deutsches Museum fills a whole rainy day. In the energy and transport sections children press buttons, look into the mine tunnel or at the aircraft in the hall. The museum is large, so choose two sections rather than everything. Before lunch a break on Museum Island suggests itself, where the Isar rushes past.

Day 6: Nymphenburg Palace. The Munich Residenz opens state rooms with treasures that children find exciting in short stretches, and the courtyards invite a breather. In the afternoon you take the tram to Nymphenburg Palace, where the garden with canals and avenues offers enough room for cycling and running. Swans in the canal, horse-drawn carriages in the Marstall and a café provide a relaxed break.

Day 7: Farewell to Munich. For the farewell you see the Eisbach wave at the edge of the English Garden, where surfers ride the standing wave all year round. Keep children away from the water, the current is stronger than it looks. From the bridge everyone has a good view. Afterwards there is time for a last coffee, before you drive to the airport.
