Day by day

Day 1: Arrival in Playa del Carmen. On the first day you visit Xcaret, a park of lagoons, underground rivers and Maya replicas. Children drift along the rivers, look at parrots and turtles and can splash on the beaches. Allow a whole day, but spread the walking over breaks in the shade. If you are tired after landing, it is best to stay at the hotel.

Day 2: Xel-Há. Xel-Há is the water programme for the morning, with snorkelling in a lagoon and life jackets for the little ones. At midday you are full and sluggish, so give the children a rest on the shore. In the afternoon you head to Xplor Park, where zip lines and cave rivers tempt the adventurous. Both parks in one day is a lot, so choose one main focus.

Day 3: Xenses Park. At Río Secreto you climb into an underground river with a helmet and water shoes, where stalactites hang above the cool water. For children of school age it is an adventure. Next comes Xenses Park, where optical illusions and sensory stations make children laugh. The day is intense, so pack spare clothes and snacks.

Day 4: Clandestino RoofTop. Clandestino RoofTop is a place for the late afternoon, when the heat eases and you look out over the rooftops. In the morning Ecopark Kantun Chi awaits with cenotes, cave passages and animals among the mangroves. Children swim in the clear water while you have shade and mosquito repellent ready. The park is less crowded than the big attractions.

Day 5: 3D Museum of Wonders. The 3D Museum of Wonders in town brings children somewhere cool when it is hot: on the paintings they reach for waterfalls or giant snakes and create photos. In the afternoon your children meet Deep Dive Mexico for a trial dive, if their age allows. Anyone who prefers to stay on land goes to the beach and looks for shells.

Day 6: XICO DIVE CENTER. The Reef Marina suits snorkelling fans who want to see a reef right on the coast. Children with a vest and fins discover colourful fish in shallow water, and you keep an eye on the current. For older teenagers with diving experience, XICO DIVE CENTER is an option, and you clarify their suitability beforehand. In the evening a quiet meal by the sea is enough.

Day 7: Farewell to Playa del Carmen. The last day belongs to THE CENOTE GUY, in case your teenagers want to dive into a cenote once more. Everyone else stays on the beach or strolls down Quinta Avenida one last time, buys souvenirs and drinks a fresh juice. Keep an eye on the departure time for the airport, as the motorway is usually quiet in the morning.
