Day by day
Day 1: Day 1: Arrival and settling in. The National Museum of Qatar stands in the sun like a desert rose made of discs. Inside, a tour leads through geology, the pearl trade and Bedouin life. After the journey, this one visit is entirely enough. Then back to the hotel in the Katara district, a prayer at dusk and a light dinner with lentil soup.
Day 2: Day 2: A day together. The Museum of Islamic Art juts into the water on a peninsula of its own, designed by Pei from pale stone. Inside are old manuscripts, ceramics and metalwork. The MIA Park in front is the place for the afternoon: children run across the lawn, and the view takes in the skyline of West Bay.
Day 3: Day 3: Culture and prayer breaks. At the Crystal Walk, glass glitters above the water, a short walk for the morning. The OliOli children's museum lets children build, touch and experiment. To finish, Bandar Skyview Point, a strip of lawn on the shore with an open view of the towers. Between the stops, the midday prayer in one of the prayer rooms is enough.
Day 4: Day 4: Family day. A second visit to the Museum of Islamic Art, this time looking at calligraphy and astrolabes rather than the overall view. Then Katara, the cultural village with an amphitheatre, a mosque and lanes full of galleries. Here the afternoon prayer can be performed in the mosque, followed by tea on the terrace by the beach.
Day 5: Day 5: Quiet day. The Pearl Qatar is an artificial island and promenade in one, with yachts, cafés and wide pavements for pushchairs. The Souq Waqif in the evening is the counterpart: narrow lanes, spices in pyramids, falcons in cages. Stick to dishes that you see freshly grilled in the souq, and stay until after the night prayer.
Day 6: Day 6: Day of discovery. Early along the Corniche, while the wind from the Gulf is still cool. After that the National Museum once more, this time focusing on the halls that got too little time on the first day. In the afternoon the Museum of Islamic Art again, now the garden side and the café with a view. A leisurely day between three buildings.
Day 7: Day 7: Last day and departure. For a farewell, the MIA Park. A picnic on the meadow, a look at the museum and across the water to the high-rises. Breakfast was generous, the prayer took place beforehand, and now there is time for a last quiet walk along the shore.
