Why this trip
The marble gate Portara stands alone on a small peninsula in front of the harbour town, and anyone who goes there at sunset understands why many couples like Naxos. The island is the largest of the Cyclades, and yet it is often quieter here than on its famous neighbours. The best months are May and June as well as September and October. In the old town of Naxos Town, the Chora, you walk through narrow lanes beneath Venetian walls.
The Della Rocca-Barozzi Venetian Museum shows how a house was once lived in, and the Archaeological Museum of Naxos lies not far from it. At Trani Porta and in the lanes you find small tavernas where you stay sitting for a long time in the evening. The beaches in the south of the island are long and sandy, suited to days without a plan. Paros, Mykonos and Santorini can be reached by ferry or flight, with Athens ready as the starting point.
The flight to Greece takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, and entry is visa-free. If you want to use Naxos as the calm middle of an island trip, Honeymoon will put the route together with you on a video call.
