Setting off on your honeymoon straight after the wedding?
Honeymoon advises not scheduling departure for the morning after the celebration, but allowing a buffer of one to two days. If you have breakfast with your guests and pack in peace, you start more relaxed. A later trip is also a good option.

Travelling straight after the wedding is possible and lovely for many couples, but not essential. What matters is how exhausted you are after the celebration and whether a flight the next day is realistic. A buffer of one to two days often helps.
Why many couples want to travel straight away
After months of planning, the wish for calm is great. If you follow on directly with the trip, you carry the mood of the celebration with you and do not have to go straight back to everyday life. Leave days can also be used in one block this way. Some couples also find the direct start romantic, because the mood of the celebration still carries.
A further advantage: the date is fixed, so the booking can be made early. That helps with popular destinations such as the Seychelles or Mauritius. The shared anticipation also often carries you through the hectic last weeks.
What speaks against it
A wedding often ends late. If you have to be at the airport early the next morning, you start tired and stressed. Tidying up, returning the clothes or saying goodbye to the guests are also left undone. Then there are gifts, flowers and clothes that have to go somewhere.
Then there is the passport. If you take a new name after the marriage, the passport must match the booking. Ask about deadlines in good time and check the current status with the FDFA (EDA). If the new passport has not arrived yet, travelling with your previous name is possible if booking and passport match.
And: a long trip is often followed by a wave of obligations, such as thank-you notes, gifts and visits to authorities. A buffer afterwards makes as much sense as one beforehand.
Travelling straight after the wedding: what can be organised
Appoint a trusted person in advance to take over gifts, clothes and decoration after the celebration. That way you do not have to deal with it the day after the party.
Keep your travel documents ready separately from the party material, ideally in a bag of their own. Also check that passport, booking confirmation and proof of insurance are to hand. A luggage service or a taxi ordered early also takes the stress out of the morning.
Tell the guests when you are leaving. A short goodbye in the morning is nicer than a silent disappearance and saves questions.
The buffer as a solution
It is best to plan the first night after the celebration without travel pressure. A hotel room near the venue or at home is enough. The next day you have breakfast without hurry, and the departure follows a day later.
If the celebration was on Saturday, a departure on Monday or Tuesday fits. If you would rather travel straight away, choose a late flight on Sunday or a midday flight on Monday.
Pack the suitcases before the party. That leaves only a glance at the clock on the morning after.
Which destinations suit an immediate start?
Destinations with a short flight time such as Santorini fit well, because you arrive quickly after landing. The Seychelles and Mauritius need more travel time, but offer the calm that does you good after a big party. What matters is that arrival does not demand another programme straight away. A recovery day on the beach is a good answer there to an exhausting celebration day.
For long-haul destinations, check whether direct flights are available. Fewer connections make the start easier. The exact connection depends on season and airline.
If you choose the mini-moon, you stay nearby and fly further afield later. That keeps both options open. This route suits couples who want to catch their breath after the wedding and enjoy the sun without a programme.
When waiting is worthwhile
If the wedding date falls in an unfavourable travel season, waiting makes sense. A destination that is lovelier at another time of year brings more than an early start in poor weather. Family reasons can also play a part, for example if guests have travelled from far away and you would like to spend a few more days with them.
The budget can also speak for it. After a wedding, funds are often tight, and a later trip is easier to plan. Honeymoon is a Swiss travel agency with video consultation, and we clarify with you which timing suits your situation. Also check which deadlines apply for cancellation or rebooking in case the date still changes.
