Day by day
Day 1: Arrival in Paris. The Eiffel Tower is made of wrought iron and offers viewing platforms with a lift and stairs. Go in the evening, when the tower lights up, and stay at the bottom for a while. After arriving at the Four Seasons Hotel George V, that is enough as a start.
Day 2: Louvre Museum. The Louvre is a former palace with a huge art collection, from Roman sculptures to the Mona Lisa. Choose two or three rooms instead of seeing everything, and plan many breaks. Afterwards you go to the Tuileries Garden to rest.
Day 3: Arc de Triomphe. The Arc de Triomphe commemorates Napoleon's victories and has a viewing platform. From the top you see twelve streets radiating out like a star. Go in the late afternoon and then stroll down the Champs-Élysées, with an aperitif as your goal. Plan the climb with breaks, because the staircase is long and narrow.
Day 4: Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre. The Basilica of Sacré-Cœur on Montmartre is a white domed church, with mosaics, stained glass and a crypt. The hill is steep, but the view is worth it. Afterwards wander through the lanes of the district and have dinner there. If you like, sit in a café afterwards and let the impressions sink in.
Day 5: Tuileries Garden. The Tuileries Garden is a formal garden with statues, including bronzes by Maillol. Sit down on one of the green chairs and let time pass. A day with little programme and a lot of breathing. An ice cream or a coffee at the edge of the flower beds suits this walk wonderfully.
Day 6: Musée d'Orsay. The Musée d'Orsay is housed in a former railway station and shows French art. Go early, choose favourite works and leave out the rest. Afterwards a walk along the Seine and dinner in a small bistro. Do not plan any further appointments, so the day stays unhurried.
Day 7: Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris. Notre-Dame is a cathedral with flying buttresses and gargoyles, known from Victor Hugo's novel. Find out beforehand what is currently accessible. Afterwards a walk across the Île de la Cité and a coffee on the bank are a good fit. Take time to linger, without a fixed plan at your back.
Day 8: Sainte-Chapelle. The Sainte-Chapelle is a Gothic chapel with relics and famous stained-glass windows. Go when daylight falls through the panes, and stay long. A place that impresses within minutes and lingers for a long time. Afterwards take time for a walk along the Seine and a quiet dinner.
Day 9: Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. Parc des Buttes-Chaumont lies in a former quarry, with tall trees, a lake, waterfalls and an old railway bridge. Pack a picnic and find a spot with a view. A day on which Paris sounds quieter. Go in the afternoon and stay until the evening, when the light lies golden over the lake.
Day 10: Farewell to Paris. The Jardin du Luxembourg is a park, with well-kept beds, planted rows of trees and statues. Ideal for the farewell: sit down, look around and let the ten days settle. Then pack and travel to the airport. That way the evening stays relaxed and you go into the next day rested.
