Private Islands

Renting a private island or choosing a resort island?

If you rent a whole island, you get maximum privacy and freedom to shape your stay, but you carry more planning effort. A villa on a resort island offers service and structure with slightly less exclusivity. Private Islands is a Swiss travel agency offering advice by video call and helps with the decision.

The term private island covers very different models. Some guests rent a whole island, others book a villa on an island with a single resort. Both offer seclusion, but effort and freedom to shape your stay differ markedly.

Two models with the same goal

On a resort island, the whole island belongs to a single operator. You live in a villa but meet other guests in the restaurant or on the beach. The island is secluded, but not exclusively yours.

With a rented private island, the entire island is available to your group. There are no other guests, and routines can largely be shaped to your rhythm. In return, the effort for planning and arrangements is greater. This also includes whether boats, sports equipment and excursions are included in the price. Also consider how much time you want to invest in organisation yourself, because an island of your own calls for decisions.

Both models deliver what many are looking for: calm, sea and distance from everyday life. What matters is how much room to shape things you want and how much organisation you wish to hand over.

Privacy and freedom to shape your stay

Whoever has the whole island decides on the daily routine, meal times and activities. That suits families, groups of friends or celebrations that want to remain undisturbed. Special requests are also easier to discuss.

On a resort island, routines remain more set. In return you get a tried and tested system with a well-rehearsed team that has already answered many questions. For couples and solo travellers this is often the more relaxed solution.

Be honest about how much exclusivity you need. Sometimes a villa with its own stretch of beach is enough to feel completely to yourself. A villa with its own stretch of beach can narrow the gap between the two models considerably. Some guests combine both, for example with a few nights on a resort island and then in a private villa.

Staff, catering and operations

With a fully rented island, you clarify which staff are on site, who cooks and how supply and safety are organised. These points belong in the contract and should be recorded in writing.

Resort islands already come with restaurants, service and activities. You choose from an offer and do not have to organise anything. That saves time and reduces the risk of gaps in the schedule. Ask about replacement solutions if equipment or boats fail. Bear in mind that exclusivity does not automatically mean comfort, but above all freedom and responsibility.

In any case, ask how emergencies, spare parts and supply are handled. On small islands, logistics is not a side issue but the core of the operation.

Logistics and arrival

Both models require a travel chain of long-haul flight, connection and transfer by boat or seaplane. With rented islands, additional arrangements on luggage, arrival time and guest groups come into play.

Seaplanes fly only in daylight. If you land late, you may have to stay overnight on the mainland or in the capital. Plan a buffer for this. On some islands landing in the dark is not possible at all, which rules out later arrivals.

With a larger group, arrivals should be bundled. That makes transfers easier and ensures that everyone is on the island at the same time. Talk to us about your expectations of calm, proximity to other guests and service before you commit.

Cancellation terms and commitment

When renting a whole island, the terms are usually stricter. Deposits are higher, deadlines longer, and cancellations are charged accordingly because the island remains blocked for other guests. Read the terms carefully before you commit and have open points confirmed in writing.

On a resort island the rules are generally more flexible because individual villas can be resold more easily. Even so, fixed deadlines often apply in peak season. Ask about rebooking options, voucher arrangements and deadlines for name changes. An honest look at your habits and group structure usually shows quickly which model fits.

Suitable travel insurance complements the operator's terms. Check which reasons are covered and which are not. Especially with large sums and groups, this step is worthwhile before booking and not only afterwards.

How to decide

Start with the number of guests and the occasion. For a celebration with many people, the whole island often makes sense, while for a couple a villa with a retreat is usually enough.

In the [planning consultation](/m/private-islands/planen) by video call we set both models side by side for your destination and show which tasks lie with you and which with the operator.

After that you can decide in peace. We check availability, terms and arrival and summarise them in a clear quote.
