Combining safari and beach: the example of Zanzibar
Safari and beach combine well, for example with Zanzibar at the end of a Tanzania trip. The order is usually safari first, then beach, with a domestic flight in between. Safari by Swiss Vibes plans the combination in a video consultation and points out entry and health matters.

After days in the bush, a beach is the ideal recovery for many. Zanzibar suggests itself for Tanzania trips, and there are alternatives on the coast of Kenya or in Mozambique. This guide explains how to choose the order, how much time you need and which questions about travel time, flights and entry you should clarify early.
Why the combination is so popular
A safari is exciting but also tiring: early starts, long drives, dust. A beach stay afterwards brings calm and lets impressions settle. Many guests find the trip more rounded as a result.
Zanzibar is the classic choice for Tanzania, because flights between the parks and the island can be arranged. Beach and safari can also be combined on the coast of Kenya or in Mozambique. The choice depends on which safari you are planning.
Time difference, arrival and acclimatisation also play a role. If you start the safari straight after the long-haul flight, you are often more tired. A buffer day or a night in the arrival city can ease the start.
Order and duration
The usual order is safari first, then beach. That way you begin with the early starts and end with rest. After the long flight from Switzerland you are still tired in the first days, which you should bear in mind when planning.
As a guideline, three to five nights at the beach are enough. If you want to stay longer you can, but beyond a certain length it becomes more of a second holiday. An extra day before the return flight reduces stress.
Think about what you want to experience at the beach. Quiet, water sports, culture or spice islands differ by place. Zanzibar has historic old towns and quiet coastal villages. If you want activity, you choose a different setting from someone who only wants to rest.
Matching the travel time
The best times for safari and for the beach do not always coincide. Rainy seasons, winds and water temperatures differ. East Africa has several rainy phases, which turn out differently depending on the stretch of coast.
In the video call we give guideline values and compare alternatives. A combination with a less ideal beach season can make sense if the safari has priority. Tell us what matters more to you.
Do not forget to plan the costs. Additional flights, transfers and accommodation add up. Without naming figures: in the offer we list all items individually, so that you can compare and adjust.
Flights, luggage and transfers
Between the parks and the coast you usually fly in small aircraft. Luggage limits apply there, often with soft bags. Beach luggage such as snorkelling gear takes up space, so pack sparingly.
Check connections and transfer times carefully. For safety reasons you should not put tight connections on the departure day. We point out buffer times.
Think about clothing and respect. In some coastal places there are rules on appropriate dress away from the beach. Find out on the spot and follow the guidance, especially in towns and villages.
Check the luggage rules for domestic flights early. On bush flights soft bags are often required instead of hard-shell suitcases, and the weight limit is often stricter than on long-haul flights. A practical solution is to pack light from the start or to leave heavy luggage at the accommodation at the departure point. Plan a buffer between the safari and the beach flight, because small aircraft do not always fly on time in bad weather or with delays, and do not schedule the connecting flight at the last minute.
Entry and health
Additional requirements often apply to trips with several stops. Check the current position with the FDFA and FOPH, also for vaccinations and malaria prevention. Especially with onward travel there can be rules that do not affect you on a direct trip.
A travel-medicine doctor can assess your route. We give no medical or legal advice, but point out in the video call the questions you should clarify.
Sun protection and sea water also need preparation. Beach and sun at the equator are intense. Pack high-factor sun protection, headwear and light clothing and make sure you drink enough.
Overall planning of the combination
A combination brings more flights, more luggage changes and more arrangements. So plan a buffer for delays and avoid tight connections on the departure day. Accommodation that is flexible on arrival and departure makes a lot easier.
In the video call we fix the order, the duration and the pace with you. We compare two options, a compact one and a relaxed one, and name the pros and cons honestly.
