Day by day
Day 1: Day 1: Arrival and settling in. A gentle start in Petra: the rock city of the Nabataeans came into being some two thousand years ago, and the Treasury, Al Khazneh, towers impressively. Today is about arriving, about orientation at the entrance, landmarks and water for the coming days. In the afternoon, first conversations already turn into arrangements for the next hikes.
Day 2: Day 2: Shared day. A classic façade at Siq al-Barid, the so-called Little Petra, shows tomb fronts in sandstone, a short distance outside the main city. Afterwards comes the Treasury, a well-known structure of the site, presumably a mausoleum. By daylight the façades glow in pink and orange, and photos are taken in pairs or with everyone in front of the entrance.
Day 3: Day 3: Exchange and exploration. The Siq, the natural gorge with red rock walls, is the entrance into the city. Further up awaits AlDayr, the Monastery, a monumental Nabataean building reached by many steps. Those with little strength take their time, as the pace is set by the most leisurely. The Petra Museum provides the background that is discussed along the way.
Day 4: Day 4: Travelling safely. The Great Temple covers about one hectare and invites reflection on the city life of the Nabataeans. The Obelisk Tomb with four pyramid-shaped pillars and the Bab as-Siq Triclinium lie near the entrance to the gorge. Short distances, clear orientation and plenty of daylight make this day the safety anchor of the week.
Day 5: Day 5: Time as a pair and as a group. The climb to the High Place of Sacrifice leads over rock steps to a summit with a far view over Petra. Below, the Royal Tombs line the wall of Jabal al-Khubtha. Those who prefer looking to climbing stay with the tombs and meet the climbers again later, so each chooses her own dose of effort and view.
Day 6: Day 6: Relaxed day. To wind down, you return to places that passed too quickly the first time: the Treasury, the façades at Siq al-Barid and the lanes of the rock city. With no marching plan you sit in the shade, draw, write, drink tea. The light changes the colours of the sandstone over the course of the day, and quiet observation is worth more than kilometres.
Day 7: Day 7: Last day and departure. The last walk leads to the Monastery AlDayr, a building hewn from the rock, even larger than the Treasury. The climb up the steps is a worthy finale, and at the top the women tell each other what Petra has meant to each of them. After that follows the farewell to the rock city and the journey home.
