Day by day
Day 1: Arrival in Dubrovnik. Krka National Park lies far north of Dubrovnik and demands a long day of travel. Better to postpone it to another trip. Today arriving is what counts: drop off your luggage, walk briefly through the old town and eat early. This way children get used to the paving, the steps and the southern sun.
Day 2: Dubrovnik City Walls. The city walls form a circular route with many steps and hardly any shade. Start early, take water and divide the route into sections. Children love the towers and cannons, but they should stay by the hand. On the wall you have rooftops, harbour and sea in view at once.
Day 3: Dubrovnik Cable Car. The cable car takes you in a few minutes to the Srđ plateau above the old town. From above you see orange rooftops, the island of Lokrum and far out to sea. If you are brave, go up in the evening when the light turns warm. For children the gondola ride is already a small adventure without long exertion.
Day 4: Tvrđava Lovrjenac / Lovrjenac Fortress. Lovrijenac Fortress stands on a rock outside the Pile Gate and looks like a knight's castle. The steps are steep but short, and at the top a wide view opens over walls and water. In summer theatre is staged here. Older children explore the battlements with enthusiasm and movement.
Day 5: Porat Dubrovnik. At the Porat harbour fishing boats lie, and children count gulls, ropes and anchors. From the old harbour basin small boats leave for Lokrum, where peacocks and swimming coves await. The quay walls are low, so keep toddlers in view. An ice cream on the mole is part of the programme, and the children set the pace.
Day 6: Bokar Tower. The Bokar bastion is a mighty round fortress on the western edge of the walls and shows how greatly the city was once defended. From the height you also see to the viewpoint over the old town and Lokrum. The visit suits a quiet morning, and afterwards you rest in the shade of a lane.
Day 7: Farewell to Dubrovnik. Last day, short item on the programme: Dadiro Viera is still on the list and can be visited in a few minutes. Afterwards walk through the old town one last time, buy lavender or figs as a souvenir, and drive to the airport. Allow generous time for the return journey, since roads are busy in summer.
