Ordering halal food on a flight
You usually order halal food on a flight as a special meal from the airline, normally a few days before departure. Have the order confirmed before departure and pack your own snacks to be safe. Halal Travel is a Swiss travel agency with video consultation.

On flights, meals are a practical matter, especially with children. Many airlines offer special meals, but names and deadlines differ. This guide describes how to proceed, what to look out for and how to cushion shortfalls. It applies in general terms and does not replace the information from the airline concerned.
How special meals work
Most airlines offer special meals, including a halal variant. Each airline sets the name and the exact ingredients itself. Check the details on the website or ask customer service.
Order the meal when booking or at the latest within the deadline the airline states. Later requests often can no longer be taken into account. Order it for each flight individually, including the outbound and return flights.
Some airlines distinguish several meal types, such as vegetarian or fish-based options. If you have doubts about ingredients, a vegetarian variant can be a fallback. Check this with the airline, as preparation is regulated differently.
Stopovers and partner airlines
If you fly with a stopover or with several airlines, each leg may have its own procedures. Ask whether your request is passed on to the partner airline. A separate confirmation for each leg gives certainty.
On flights from Switzerland via the Gulf states or Turkey the choice is generally broad, but it is worth checking in advance what is available. We are happy to clarify this during planning.
Ask how codeshare flights are handled. Here one airline sells the flight and another operates it. The meal may then need to be confirmed with the operating airline. A short call usually settles this quickly.
Families and children
Children often have their own meals, which must be ordered separately. Clarify whether the children's meal is also halal, and ask about gelatine in desserts. Baby food and milk can usually be carried in a reasonable quantity, but check the rules of the airline and the airport.
Pack snacks that keep on the way, such as fruit, bread or bars. This lets you bridge waiting times at stopovers and delays without stress.
With children, take prepared snacks in small portions. This helps with delayed take-offs, waiting at the gate and turbulence, when no service takes place. Fruit, bread, cheese and nuts are common options, provided allergies allow it.
If the meal does not arrive
Sometimes the ordered meal is missing or swapped. Speak to the cabin crew when boarding and point out your order. The crew can then often provide an alternative.
Your own snacks are the most reliable buffer. Observe the destination country's import rules for food and check them before the trip.
Note the rules for liquids in hand luggage. You can fill empty drinking bottles after security. Check the requirements of the departure and destination airports before the trip, as they can differ.
How it fits with the rest of the trip
Meals on the plane are only one part of the planning. Hotels, transfers and restaurants at the destination need equally clear arrangements. More in the guide [Planning a halal trip](/m/halal-travel/planen).
At Halal Travel we record your wishes in the offer and ask airlines and hotels for details. Consultation takes place by video call.
On long flights a change of meal may be needed after landing. Plan the first meal at your destination, for example in the hotel or a restaurant you know. This way you get a reliable meal after arrival without searching.
Combining allergies and special requests
If you have further requirements besides halal, such as allergies or a diet, you should state this when ordering. Not every combination is available. Ask which meal type comes closest to your needs, and plan additions.
If you are unsure, contact with the airline is helpful. We support you with the planning, but the confirmation itself comes from the airline. Keep it ready in case the crew asks for it.
