Oman is regarded as a quiet destination on the Gulf. Muscat combines old town, mosques and beach, while the surroundings offer wadis, mountains and coast. For families the mix of city and nature is attractive. This guide describes in general terms how to plan a stay. Travel duration and climate details are guidelines. If you settle the main points in advance, you travel with less uncertainty and can enjoy your stay on site more calmly. The following sections take you through travel season, places, everyday life and getting there.

Travel season and climate

In summer it is very hot in Oman, and in the winter half-year it is pleasant. The months from October to April usually suit excursions. Check the weather for your dates, because regional differences are large.

Around Ramadan and Eid, opening hours change. Allow for this if your trip falls in that period, and check the dates for your travel year.

The coastal towns and villages offer quiet beaches. Ask your accommodation about suitable swimming bays and check waves and currents before children go into the water. Supervision remains important, even on seemingly calm beaches.

Muscat: city and coast

Muscat is more manageable than some other capitals on the Gulf. The old town, souk and coastal promenade can be explored in two to three days. Mosques are partly open to visitors, with their own hours and dress rules.

Find out on site about opening hours and dress code. For women a scarf is often sensible, and modest clothing for everyone. Plan breaks, as the sun can be strong.

Wadis are popular excursion destinations with water holes. The weather there can change quickly, so information on site is important. Ask the accommodation or the driver whether an excursion on the chosen day makes sense.

Nature and excursions

Wadis, mountains and beaches are within reach of the capital. With children, day trips with breaks and enough water are sufficient. Check the weather and road conditions before you set off.

For longer drives a driver is practical, while a rental car gives more freedom. Clarify child seats and insurance in advance. We support the planning by video call.

Visits to mosques are partly possible and partly only at certain times. Find out about the rules on site and allow enough time. Children should know that it is quiet in prayer rooms.

Choose excursions according to the stamina of the youngest travellers. Wadi visits with swimming spots suit children well, but when it rains in the mountains you should never go into a wadi, because flash floods occur suddenly. Plan only one larger excursion per day and leave the hot midday for a break in the shade. Take water and sun protection in the car. For drives through the desert, an experienced local driver is recommended rather than driving yourself.

Halal everyday life and prayer

Halal cuisine is widespread in everyday life, and prayer options are a matter of course. Still, hotels differ in the serving of alcohol and in the kitchen. Ask before booking and record the answers in writing.

Hotels often provide a prayer mat and mark the direction. More in the guide [Planning a halal trip](/m/halal-travel/planen).

For meals, meat dishes with rice, fresh bread and dates are common. Ask about ingredients if you have special requirements. In hotels the kitchen staff can usually accommodate requests if you state them early.

Getting there and entry

From Switzerland you reach Muscat with a stopover or, depending on the season, directly. Plan the arrival to be calm, especially with children. The time difference is moderate.

Entry rules can change. Check the current status with the FDFA and the FOPH before you book. After the video call we send you a non-binding offer.

The days are pleasant in winter, but the sun stays strong. Sun protection, headwear and plenty of water are a must. Plan excursions with shade breaks and leave time for rest in the hotel.

Combining with Dubai or a beach stay

If you want more variety, combine Muscat with a stay in a city on the Gulf or with a coastal region. Distances are manageable and connections exist. Check times and luggage rules.

We advise you on this by video call and put together an offer that takes flight, accommodation and your wishes on meals and prayer into account.

Before departure, note down important addresses and phone numbers, such as those of the accommodation and the insurer. Also ask about emergency numbers on site. With these details you stay able to act in any situation, and the trip runs more calmly.
