Finding the qibla in a hotel room: simple ways

You find the qibla in a hotel room through a note from the hotel, a compass app or a map application with a bearing to Mecca. Ask when booking about a marking in the room, and check the direction on site with a second method. Halal Travel is a Swiss travel agency with video consultation.

Many travellers want to know straight after arrival in which direction to pray. Some hotels mark the direction in the room, others do not. This guide describes ways to determine the prayer direction reliably and questions you can ask the hotel in advance. It deliberately sticks to practical notes and makes no religious judgements.

Ask the hotel first

The simplest way is an enquiry before the trip. Many properties in Muslim-influenced countries mark the prayer direction in the room with an arrow on the ceiling, on the desk or in the wardrobe. Ask about it when booking and record the request in writing.

At properties without a marking, reception can often help on arrival. Ask there for the direction in relation to the window or the room entrance. This gives you a fixed point of reference for the whole stay.

When booking, write two lines: that you would like the prayer direction in the room and a prayer mat. The hotel can assign this to the room before you arrive. If there is no reaction, a short follow-up a few days before arrival is worthwhile.

Using a compass app

A compass app on your smartphone shows the direction of prayer. Enable location sharing beforehand and calibrate the device by swinging it in a figure-of-eight motion. Hold it flat and away from metal objects or speakers.

Download the app before the trip and test it at home. This way you know how it reacts and do not depend on a connection abroad. A second app serves as a cross-check.

Some travellers also use a small pocket compass. It needs no battery and works without a connection. It is important to keep it away from the metal of the furniture, otherwise it shows incorrectly. Check the reading in two places in the room.

Cross-checking with a map and the position of the sun

A map application can show you the approximate compass direction from your location. This is practical if the compass is disturbed by components in the room. Orient yourself by streets or buildings whose position you know, and transfer the direction into the room.

The position of the sun can also serve as a rough check. Do not rely on it alone, however, as it varies with the time of day and latitude. Several methods together give the greatest certainty.

Memorise the direction right after arrival using a fixed point, such as the window. Then you do not have to measure again for every prayer. If you change rooms or location during a round trip, determine the direction again.

Prayer mat and room layout

Ask before the trip whether the hotel provides a prayer mat. Many properties do so on request. If you want to be sure, pack a light mat that takes little space in your luggage.

Also pay attention to the room layout. A spot with enough floor space between bed and wardrobe makes prayer easier. For families a larger room or an apartment is worthwhile, so that several people have space.

In multi-bed rooms and small rooms, note the space available. Ask whether furniture may be moved to make room. In apartments there is usually a free area in the living space that works well.

On the move: excursions and airports

Outside the hotel, prayer rooms at airports and in shopping centres help. Many airports in Turkey, the Gulf states and Malaysia have such rooms, often separate for women and men. Check this in advance for your connecting points.

You will find further notes in the guide to prayer on the move. On excursions with a driver you can have breaks planned if you say so in advance.

For travel with the family, a simple ritual is worthwhile too: on check-in, fix and mark the direction together, for example with a small sticky note. This way children also know where the prayer spot is, and the room stays tidy.

What else hotels can offer

Besides a mat and direction, some properties offer further help, such as a Quran in the room, prayer times at reception or a quiet room. Ask what is available. Not every property has these options, but many staff are glad to help.

Record your wishes in the booking confirmation. If you book through Halal Travel, we take over the enquiry and list the assurances in the offer. We advise by video call only.
