Overview
Fjords in the desert: that is how best to describe Musandam, the exclave in the north of Oman. The rock walls drop steeply into the water, narrow sea inlets called khors reach far inland, and dhows glide over calm water. Dolphins often accompany the boats for a stretch, and in small bays you moor to snorkel. Khasab, the main town, is a manageable harbour with a fish market and an old fort in which the history of the coast can be told.
There is hardly any road noise. From October to March it is pleasantly warm, in summer by contrast very hot. Couples hire a dhow for a day on the water, families combine boat trip, beach stop and evening on the coast. The official language is Arabic, in tourism businesses English is spoken.
