Overview

Stone Town, the old town of Zanzibar, smells of spices and sea salt, and that is exactly where the journey to one of the best-known islands of East Africa begins. Behind the winding lanes the beaches open up: Nungwi and Kendwa in the north with sandy bays and sunsets, Paje in the east with wind for kitesurfers. The Mnemba Atoll attracts divers and snorkellers. From July to October it is dry and the climate mild, the beaches are wide and the water shallow.

Couples combine rest days with dhow trips, families try spice farms and mangroves. Swahili and English are spoken, in daily life cash in dollars or shillings plays a large role. On formalities: a visa is required (eVisa or visa on arrival), which you should check with the FDFA (EDA) before booking. The flight time is about 9 to 11 hrs, usually with a change.

Tipping is an important part of income for guides and staff. How an island stay can be combined with a safari is something you decide in a video call with Private Islands.
