Holiday apartment or hotel for halal families
Holiday apartments offer their own kitchen and more privacy, while hotels offer service, meals and fixed routines. For halal families the choice depends on how important self-catering, space and the property's halal information are. Halal Travel is a Swiss travel agency with video consultation.

Many families wonder whether a holiday apartment or a hotel suits their needs better. For halal-conscious travel, kitchen, privacy, space and prayer all play a role. This guide compares both options in general terms and lists questions you should settle before booking. There is no universal answer, because families and their trips differ greatly. The following sections help you recognise your own priorities and make the right choice, without deciding hastily and without overlooking important questions.
Holiday apartment: self-catering and space
In a holiday apartment you cook for yourselves and know exactly what goes on the table. For many families this is an advantage if they value preparing their own food. Apartments also offer more space and separate sleeping areas.
In return, the service of a hotel is missing. Shopping, cooking and cleaning are up to you. Check whether halal shops are nearby and how the kitchen is equipped.
With apartments it is worth looking at the facilities: oven, fridge, cookware, washing machine. Ask for photos of the kitchen and about cleaning fees. A guest who cooks for themselves needs different things from a guest who only has breakfast.
Hotel: service and meals
Hotels offer breakfast, often half board, and service. This relieves parents, especially with small children. Contact persons are also available around the clock.
In return, the kitchen and routines are decided by others. Ask about halal information, the origin of the meat and alcohol on the premises, and have the answers confirmed in writing. Have any certificates checked.
Hotels often offer kids' clubs, play areas and baby equipment. Ask about cots, high chairs and childcare hours. With small children in particular, these things make the difference between stress and relaxation.
Privacy and room layout
Families often need more than one double room. Connecting doors, suites or apartments create space to retreat. Apartments usually offer separate rooms, while hotels offer family rooms.
Ask about room size, beds and balcony. If separate pool or beach times matter to you, ask about the property's concept in advance. Not every hotel offers such times.
If you choose an apartment, clarify the arrival arrangements in advance. Key handover, arrival time and a contact on site are important, especially with late flights. Ask for an emergency number.
Prayer and location
Check the proximity to mosques or prayer rooms. In apartments there is often no indication of the prayer direction, so determine it with an app. Hotels sometimes mark it in the room.
The location decides everyday distances. With children, shops, playgrounds and parks nearby are valuable. More in the guide [Planning a halal trip](/m/halal-travel/planen).
The best type of accommodation also depends on the place. In large cities apartments often offer location and space, while in holiday regions resorts score with a pool and beach. Check which option suits your type of trip.
How to decide
For short trips with a lot of programme, a hotel usually suits better. For longer stays and large families, there is a lot to be said for an apartment. A mix is also possible.
We discuss your priorities by video call and send a non-binding offer. We record the property's assurances.
You could also combine the two: a few days in a hotel for relaxation and then an apartment for quiet everyday life, or the other way round. This takes more organisation but may suit your family. We check it with you in the video call.
A simple rule of thumb: if you stay longer than a week or travel with small children, there is a lot to be said for the holiday apartment, because kitchen and washing machine make daily life easier. If you stay shorter or mainly want relaxation, the hotel with breakfast is usually more comfortable. In both cases check whether halal food is available nearby, and ask before booking. On a longer trip you can also combine, for example hotel first, then apartment.
Comparing costs and extras
Compare total costs: apartments often have cleaning and additional charges, while hotels have meals and service. A calculation for the whole trip shows which option makes sense for your family.
Ask about extras, such as transfers, cots, laundry service or later check-out. We set the details side by side in the offer so that you can decide without surprises.
Read reviews from other families carefully, but with some distance. Look for concrete details on location, noise and facilities. General verdicts are less helpful than precise descriptions. If questions remain, it is worth asking the provider directly.
