Accommodation for women travelling alone: what to look for
When choosing accommodation, look for a central location, a reception staffed for long hours, reliable reviews and the option of arranging transfers. Personal guesthouses with breakfast help you settle in. Swiss Vibes is a Swiss travel agency offering video consultations and selects properties with solo travellers in mind.

For solo travellers, accommodation is more than a bed. It is a retreat, a meeting place and a point of contact. With a few clear criteria you will find a place where you feel at ease.
Location and surroundings
A central location with busy streets offers short distances and safety in the evening. Before booking, check the route from the station or airport and the way to restaurants, stops and a shop for small items.
A quiet district within walking distance of the centre is often more pleasant than a loud main road. Maps and pictures help with the assessment. If in doubt, ask the accommodation directly about the route from the nearest station or taxi rank.
Read reviews specifically for comments on the area and on evening walks. Remarks such as "well lit" or "restaurants nearby" say more than general praise. Good properties answer such questions kindly and precisely.
Reception and support
A reception staffed for long hours gives you security on a late arrival. Ask about opening hours and an emergency number for the night. Clarify how you get into the building when reception is closed and who can be reached.
Personal guesthouses often offer warm contact and local tips. This makes the first day and arriving in an unfamiliar place easier. A property that knows your name by the evening quickly creates a feeling of home.
Clarify in advance whether the property orders taxis, arranges tours or stores luggage. Such services are especially valuable for solo travellers, because they shorten journeys and take decisions off your hands without your having to explain yourself.
Room and details
Look for a reliable door lock, windows that close and a safe or lockable compartment for passport and cards. Ask if none of this is visible in the pictures.
A room on a higher floor or away from the entrance door gives extra peace. Good lighting in the stairwell and a lift are also helpful, above all with luggage. Also check whether the room is quiet, because good sleep contributes a great deal to wellbeing.
A small kettle, a desk or an armchair by the window make the room a retreat. On longer trips especially, such details matter more than a large bathroom, because that is where you spend evenings and unwind.
Reading reviews properly
Reviews from women and solo travellers are especially revealing. Look for remarks on safety, friendliness and cleanliness, and on whether staff responded helpfully to questions and problems.
Individual negative voices are normal. What matters are recurring points, such as noise, routes or lack of support. Besides the latest reviews, also read older ones to spot changes in management and condition.
New properties without reviews are harder to assess. We know many accommodations from feedback and cooperation and also read between the lines. If anything is unclear, we ask before we suggest a property.
Company, consultation and booking
If you are looking for company, choose properties with a shared breakfast table, roof terrace or courtyard. There, conversations with other travellers arise almost by themselves. Small guesthouses are often run by women and offer a particularly warm atmosphere.
If you prefer peace, larger properties offer retreats such as a reading room, garden or spa. That too is part of good planning. What matters is that you have the choice and feel neither isolated nor crowded.
In the [planning call](/m/women-only/planen) by video call, we discuss your wishes and suggest suitable properties. We coordinate arrival time, transfer and room so that the first evening goes calmly, and on request book only the first nights firmly.
Arrival and the first evening
The first evening decides a lot. Arrive in daylight if possible, and have the transfer take you straight to the accommodation. Tell reception your arrival time so that someone is ready.
Take your time to check the room: lock, windows, emergency exit, lighting. Ask about a restaurant nearby and have the route shown to you. That way, after half an hour you know your surroundings.
Save the property's address and telephone number on your phone and also note them on paper. This helps if the battery is flat or a taxi driver does not know the address.
