Marrakech: choosing a riad or a hotel
In Marrakech a riad offers personal service in the old town, while a larger hotel offers more space, a pool and infrastructure outside it. What matters are location, distances and your wish for calm. Luxury is a Swiss travel agency with video consultations.

Schritt für Schritt
- Clarify whether you prefer the old town or calm and space.
- Set the travel season and allow for the heat in summer.
- Check the location of the property on the map, especially access to the medina.
- Plan the transfer and luggage transport in the narrow lanes.
- Compare service, cuisine and pool at the property.
- Reserve excursions and restaurants in advance.
Checkliste
- Do you want to stay in the medina or on the edge of the city?
- How do you get to the property with luggage?
- Does the property have a pool or courtyard?
- How loud is the surrounding area, for instance from calls to prayer or markets?
- Which travel season suits your heat tolerance?
- Are excursions and restaurants reserved?
- Is a driver or guide arranged?
- Have entry and health been checked with the FDFA (EDA) and the FOPH (BAG)?
Marrakech can be experienced in two ways: in the middle of the medina in a house with a courtyard, or in a hotel with a garden and pool on the edge. Both have their charm, but they call for different expectations of distances, noise and comfort. This guide helps with the decision.
What makes a riad
A riad is a traditional town house with a courtyard, often with only a few rooms. The service is personal, breakfast is often served in the courtyard, and the atmosphere is calm once the door is closed.
The location in the medina brings closeness to the souks and sights. The lanes are narrow, however, and cars cannot reach everywhere. Luggage is collected at the edge, and at night you find your way more easily with an escort. Ask how the property organises arrival.
With a riad, check the facilities. Heating, air conditioning, hot water and noise protection differ from house to house. Not every room has its own bathroom, and some stairs are steep. Tell us your requirements so that we can select suitable properties.
What a hotel offers
Larger hotels are often in the new town or on the edge of the city. They offer more space, larger pools, a spa, several restaurants and easier access by car. That suits you if you want rest by the water and explore the city on excursions.
What is missing is direct closeness to the old town. You travel into the medina and back for visits. In a video call we show you the location so that you can judge distance and travel time.
In hotels outside the old town, journeys are a factor. Ask about a shuttle, driver service and times into the medina. In the evening journeys can take longer, so allow a buffer.
Calm and privacy
A riad is inward-facing and shielded. Some houses even offer the whole house for exclusive use, which is attractive for groups or families. Ask about this if you want privacy.
A hotel offers retreat in the garden or in the room. Check room position and pool, because noise and sightlines depend on the property. More on this in the guide to [discretion and privacy](/m/luxury/ratgeber/reisen-mit-diskretion-privatsphaere).
If you want both, combine a few nights in a riad with a few in a hotel. That way you experience the city up close and then find calm by the pool. We discuss the split in a video call.
Travel season and weather
Marrakech is most pleasant in spring and autumn. In summer it becomes very hot, in winter the days are mild but the nights cool. In riads without heating this can be noticeable, so ask about the facilities.
In the heat, a pool at the property is an advantage. Plan sightseeing for the morning and towards evening, and leave midday for rest. The information is based on experience, and the weather can differ.
In summer a house with a pool and shade is worthwhile, in winter one with good heating. Ask about breakfast too, because sitting in the courtyard is more or less pleasant depending on the season. Such details shape a stay more than photos show.
Planning and journey
From Switzerland you fly to Marrakech directly or with a change, depending on the season. A transfer from the airport saves time, especially with luggage in the medina. On request we organise a driver and guide.
Check the current position on entry and health with the FDFA and the FOPH. For planning overall, the guide [Planning a luxury trip](/m/luxury/ratgeber/luxusreise-planen-budget-vorlauf) helps, and our consultation takes place by video call.
Restaurants, souks and excursions
Marrakech offers a great deal beyond the medina, such as gardens, museums and excursions into the Atlas Mountains. Plan only one larger item per day, as heat and traffic cost time.
Reserve restaurants early, above all in high season. For shopping in the souks, a guide who knows the routes, prices and bargaining helps. Ask the property for trustworthy recommendations.
We combine excursions with a driver and match times to your pace. That leaves room for breaks by the pool or in the courtyard.
