Luxury cruise or yacht: which suits you?

A luxury cruise offers programme, dining and many ports on a larger ship, while a yacht gives you full control over route, time and guests. Which one suits you depends on group size, your wish for privacy and the planning effort. Luxury is a Swiss travel agency with video consultations.

Schritt für Schritt

  1. Set the group size and the length of the trip.
  2. Decide whether programme or control over the route matters more.
  3. Check the cruising area and the travel season.
  4. Compare at least two options in writing.
  5. Ask about services, crew and costs outside the package.
  6. Take health, sea conditions and the journey to the port into account.

Checkliste

  • How many people are travelling?
  • Do you want a programme or a free route?
  • How sensitive are your fellow travellers to rough seas?
  • What is included in the price, and what is not?
  • How large is the crew in relation to the guests?
  • How does the journey to the departure port work?
  • Are insurance and repatriation arranged?
  • Have documents and entry been checked with the FDFA (EDA) and the FOPH (BAG)?

Both ways of travelling combine accommodation and transport, but they feel very different. On a ship, much is prepared for you; on a yacht, you shape almost everything yourself. This guide shows where the differences lie and which questions you should settle before booking.

Two ways of travelling compared

A cruise ship is a floating hotel with restaurants, a spa and a programme. You change port every day and hardly have to organise anything. Luxury here often means small ships, plenty of staff per guest and a calm atmosphere.

A chartered yacht is a home of your own for a while. You decide route, pace and departure time, usually with your own crew. The group is small and the rhythm individual, but planning needs more coordination.

Cabin choice matters on ships. Cabins in the middle and on lower decks feel rough seas less, balcony cabins offer a view and privacy. Ask about the position relative to engines, bars and lifts to avoid noise.

Privacy and group size

On a ship you share restaurants, decks and shore excursions with other guests. This can be pleasant and sociable, but it does not suit every wish for retreat. The smaller the ship, the more personal it usually is.

On a yacht only your guests and the crew are on board. This suits families, groups of friends and special occasions. The number of cabins limits the group, so check early that all fellow travellers have room.

Yachts differ between motor yachts and sailing yachts. Motor yachts are faster and often offer more comfort, sailing yachts are quieter and closer to nature. Ask about draught, range and equipment for water sports.

Route, time and weather

A cruise follows a fixed plan. This makes the trip predictable but limits spontaneity. Weather or politics can change routes, which you should read up on in the terms.

On a yacht you adapt the route to wind and mood. You stay longer in a bay or set off earlier. There, too, weather and sea conditions shape the programme, and guests who quickly become seasick should choose calm waters.

A look at the season helps. In the Mediterranean early summer and early autumn are popular, in tropical waters there are rainy and windy seasons. For your preferred area we tell you the usual travel times and check them with you.

With a yacht, expect a flexible route that adapts to the weather. That is an advantage, but it also means you fix the exact course only on the way with the crew. On a cruise the port times are fixed, and a shore excursion often lasts only a few hours. Those who are sensitive to rough seas choose calm waters and seasons and should first consider a short trip. Ask about alternative plans in case a port cannot be called at because of wind.

Service, cuisine and equipment

On luxury ships, restaurants, bars and entertainment are part of everyday life. Ask about drinks packages, excursions and wellness, because not everything is included in the price. A clear picture of the services prevents surprises.

A yacht offers individual wishes for menu, times and activities. Ask about the crew, the equipment for water sports and the range of the vessel. Discretion goes without saying with a good crew. Planning with Luxury

We obtain quotes and set them side by side in one overview. In a video call we discuss group, wishes and dates, and say openly where an option has its limits. We book only what you confirm.

For the journey to the port we plan flight and transfer with a buffer. Keep health and entry in mind and check the current position with the FDFA and the FOPH. General notes on lead time are in the guide [Planning a luxury trip](/m/luxury/planen).

Who suits which option

A cruise suits guests who want to see a lot and organise little. It is suitable for couples, small groups and travellers who value company. Small ships combine programme with calm.

A yacht suits families, circles of friends and occasions where privacy counts. It requires decisions on route and pace, but the crew takes care of much. A skipper with experience of the area is decisive here.

Some guests combine both, for instance a week on a yacht followed by a hotel stay. In a video call we discuss which option suits your group and season.
