Travelling with discretion and privacy

Discretion when travelling comes from selection and agreement: small properties, short distances, clear rules on passing on data and a fixed contact person. Share your wishes early, then they can be taken into account at every stage. Luxury is a Swiss travel agency with video consultations.

For many guests, privacy is the real luxury. It depends less on price category than on location, staff and organisation. This guide shows how to plan accommodation, journey and communication so that as few people as possible know about your trip and you are left undisturbed.

What discretion means when travelling

Discretion has several levels. It concerns who knows about your trip, who sees you and who receives your data. Not every guest needs every level, so it is worth clarifying beforehand what matters to you.

Some guests mainly want calm away from other guests. Others care that their name is not passed on. The clearer the wish, the more precisely we can choose properties and procedures.

Check how your name is recorded at the property. In booking systems it often appears on lists that several departments see. Ask whether the property can abbreviate names internally or add a note.

Choosing accommodation with distance

Small properties with few rooms, or villas, offer more distance than large resorts. A shielded location, screening from view and short distances between room and beach or pool are important. Also ask about separate access.

Check rooms with a view of paths, terraces or neighbours. Photos do not always show sightlines. We discuss the location in a video call and ask the properties where needed. More on shielded villas is at [Villa with a private pool](/m/luxury/ratgeber/villa-mit-privatpool-was-bedeutet-das).

Payment routes also leave traces. Invoices and receipts can be seen by several people. Discuss whether you settle payments in advance with the agency or at the property, and which details may appear on receipts.

Arrival without waiting

At airports and stations you are most visible. A driver waiting for you at the exit saves distances and glances. Priority check-in and lounges also reduce points of contact.

For a high degree of privacy a private flight comes into question, which we compare in the guide [Private jet or business class](/m/luxury/ratgeber/privatjet-oder-business-class). Note that security and entry checks apply there too. Check entry requirements with the FDFA (EDA) and the FOPH (BAG).

The same applies to occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries. Share only what the property needs to know. We follow your instructions and pass nothing on unasked.

Data and communication

We pass on your data only as far as it is necessary for flight, accommodation and transfers. Tell us whether reservations should run under a different contact name, for instance that of an assistant. Passport details must, however, remain correct.

Agree how we may reach you, by telephone, encrypted message or email. On request we send documents together so that you do not have to check several emails. General notes are in our privacy policy.

Finally, a clear emergency plan belongs here too. Name a trusted person who can be reached in a real emergency, and tell us whom we may contact. That way discretion is preserved without losing time in an emergency.

Behaviour on site

On site, too, your behaviour decides. Anyone who shares photos with a location straight away reveals your stay. Wait with posts until after departure, or refrain altogether.

Tell the staff what matters to you. Good properties take this seriously and adapt their procedures. A fixed contact person with us remains reachable during the trip too. Further planning help is at [Planning a luxury trip](/m/luxury/planen).

For groups and families

The more people travel, the harder discretion becomes. Every additional person knows data and plans. So decide who receives information and how it is passed on.

With children or an assistant, agreements on photos and names are especially important. Talk about rules before the trip begins, and ask the property to observe them. A single contact person makes this easier.

For groups, a villa of your own or a separate area in the property is worthwhile. That way you stay among yourselves and share paths with fewer guests. We check the options in a video call.

Discuss with all fellow travellers before the trip what may be shared. Teenagers in particular quickly post photos with a location, which undermines your efforts at privacy. A simple agreement is to publish pictures only after departure and to switch off location functions. Also appoint one person to answer questions from staff and third parties, so that several different accounts of your plans do not circulate. Tell the accommodation your wishes on discretion in writing in good time.

Who receives my data?

Only bodies needed for your trip, such as the airline and the accommodation. Ask us in the conversation.
