Overview
Volcanoes, rice terraces and reefs lie so close together in Indonesia that a mountain hike and a dive can be combined in one day. From April to October is the dry season, the paths are firmer, the visibility under water better. On Bali the ascent to the sunrise on the volcano Batur leads over lava rock, and on the coast dive bases and surf beaches await. Lombok attracts mountaineers, because the volcano Rinjani demands several days, solid fitness and good equipment.
Yogyakarta on Java offers culture and hill landscapes, from there temple complexes such as Borobudur are a must-see, reached via paths between rice fields. Jakarta serves mostly only as the arrival point. The island world demands time for the routes between places: ferries, drives over mountain roads and domestic flights quickly swallow a day. It is therefore worthwhile to choose fewer stops and stay longer, so that the stages do not end in haste.
