Overview
Many think of Spain as a beach country, yet mountains, gorges and volcanoes shape the map. On Tenerife the way to the Teide leads through lava fields that recall lunar landscapes, and on Gran Canaria paths link green mountain villages with dunes. Mallorca offers, in the Tramuntana mountains, routes between sea and rock. Granada lies at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, whose ascent demands respect even in spring, while San Sebastián and Bilbao in the green north combine coastal paths and hills.
The places differ so strongly that a trip is best planned with a clear focus: mountain, coast or island hopping. The Canaries offer hikeable days almost all year round, the mainland by contrast has clear seasons. It is therefore worthwhile to choose region and month to match, instead of setting a destination and forgetting the conditions. Water and sun protection are important everywhere.
