A continent in miniature: Gran Canaria has dunes, pine forests, ravines and mountains of almost 2,000 metres, and everything lies close together. In the dunes of Maspalomas you can hike at sunrise, in the interior of the island paths lead through mountain villages and over ridges with a view as far as the sea. The island suits active travellers all year round, especially from April to June and from September to October, when temperatures are most pleasant for walking routes. In the south the sea offers snorkelling and surfing opportunities, in the north green valleys with laurel forest beckon.

The Roque Nublo, a striking rock in the interior of the island, is the goal of a popular hike that ends after a few hundred metres of ascent with a wide view. In the morning the view is best, before clouds gather, and sturdy shoes are important because of the stony path. Tenerife lies as a neighbour in the Canary Islands and offers a higher challenge with the Teide. Seville and Marbella are on the mainland.
