May to September is the time of clear air in South Africa: cool mornings, dry paths and animals that are easy to see at the few waterholes. For active travellers that means hikes in the mountains stay pleasant and game drives in the bushveld become more rewarding. Cape Town is the first choice for movement: Table Mountain can be climbed by several routes, and the coast of the Cape Peninsula offers routes that combine wind, rock and sea.
