Overview
Beneath the water surface off the Yucatán Peninsula a second world begins: cenotes, reefs and coral gardens that can be explored by diving and snorkelling. From November to April the conditions are dry and visibility is usually clear, which is why the time is ideal for active water days. Cozumel is regarded by divers as one of the best sites in the Caribbean, and the currents at the reef demand some experience. Akumal is known for sea turtles grazing in shallow water, and can also be experienced with a snorkel.
Tulum combines beach with Mayan ruins and cycle paths in the jungle, whereas Bacalar offers a lagoon that can be explored by kayak or on a paddleboard. The cenotes, natural limestone pools with clear fresh water, are a chapter of their own: swimming, snorkelling and, for the experienced, diving in caves. Anyone diving in cenotes should check their certification and go with experienced companions. The journey is long at approx.
