Why this trip
On Holbox there are no cars, and that changes travelling: anyone out and about here walks, cycles or paddles. The island lies in a lagoon off the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, and its days follow the water. If you are interested in nature, you find it in the flamingos standing in the shallow zones, and at Punta Mosquito, where wide sandbanks appear at low tide. From June to September the whale sharks pass through, but the best time to travel for active trips is between November and April, when the heat eases.
Then an excursion to the Hoyo Negro Yalahau is worthwhile, a spring in the mangrove forest in which you can swim. Kayaking along the mangroves lets you get to know an ecosystem that is experienced more quietly by boat than on foot. The journey is long, approx. 12 to 14 hours and usually with a change.
