Overview
The Alps do not end in Italy, they only really begin, and the country is much more than pasta and beach. The Dolomites around Val Gardena and Cortina d'Ampezzo offer routes between rock needles and alpine pastures, with stages that rely on huts. From April to June and from September to October the paths are usually passable and the temperatures pleasant. On the coast too it is a matter of feet and muscle power: the Cinque Terre link five villages via paths through vine terraces, and the Sentiero degli Dei on the Amalfi Coast runs high above the sea.
Sicily widens the range with volcano hikes, Calabria with wild, hardly known coastal stretches. Between coast and mountains lie worlds: here salt and wind, there rock and alpine meadows. Anyone wanting to combine both in one trip needs equipment for both conditions and some time for getting there, because railways and roads are slow in some regions. With a flight time of approx.
