Behind the city on the gulf rises a volcano, and the ascent of Vesuvius is the activity that makes Naples attractive for hikers. The path to the crater leads over ash and lava rock, around an hour on foot from the car park, with a view of the gulf and islands. It requires sturdy shoes and water, but no special fitness. In the city itself it is about movement on other levels: Napoli Sotterranea leads into tunnels beneath the lanes, the Catacombs of San Gennaro into passages from antiquity.

If you prefer to stay on the surface, walk from the Piazza del Plebiscito to the Palazzo Reale and on along the sea. The route to the Amalfi Coast with its high-level paths, the Sentiero degli Dei and steep staircase villages can be arranged well from Naples.
