Why this trip
Five villages, one path: that is the idea of the Cinque Terre. Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore cling to the Ligurian steep coast, and hiking paths link them over vine terraces and steps. The distance between the villages is short, but the ascent adds up when several sections come together in one day. The Via dell'Amore, the famous coastal path between Manarola and Riomaggiore, is an easy part of the network.
If you want more, take higher paths with a view of the sea and vines. In Corniglia, the only village not directly on the water, a long staircase awaits. A map for the hiking paths is available at the stations, but individual sections are temporarily closed, for example because of landslides. Check the current condition before you start and allow more time than the figures on the sign suggest.
April to June and September to October are the best times, in high summer it is hot and crowded. Pisa, Bologna and Milan are neighbours for arrival or extension. You plan your stages in the video call with fitness and luggage in mind.
