Why this trip

A capital as an active destination sounds unusual, but Madrid has more greenery than the name suggests. In the Real Jardín Botánico and in Retiro Park you walk along avenues and past ponds, and the paths suit warming up after arrival. The Jardín del Capricho is a quiet garden on the edge of the city in which nature lovers find calm. The real appeal, however, lies outside.

The Sierra de Guadarrama begins only a short drive north of the city and offers hiking trails through pine forests up to over 2,000 metres. There it is about ascent and clear air, and on some days snow lies. Anyone who combines a day in the city with a day in the mountains gets two sides of Spain. The months from April to June and from September to October suit best, because in high summer the plateau gets very hot.

The flight takes approx. 2 hrs, entry is visa-free in the Schengen area. Valencia, Bilbao and San Sebastián are neighbours for further stages. How city and mountain are weighted is something you set in the video call.
