Why this trip

The Santa Bárbara castle towers over Alicante, and the climb up to it is the best introduction to the city. The path leads over steps and ramps, does not take long, but brings a few metres of ascent and a wide view over the harbour and the Costa Blanca. From April to June and from September to October the temperatures are ideal for it. The Explanada, a promenade with mosaic paving and palm trees, is good for easy morning running, and the city's beaches are suited to swimming and paddling.

If you want more nature, travel from Alicante to the coast north of the city or into the hills of the hinterland, where hiking routes lead through almond groves. Towards evening the walk up the Benacantil hill or to the island of Tabarca is worthwhile, reachable by boat and with snorkelling coves. This way the day can be divided into an active part in the morning and a quiet one in the evening, without losing any distance. Neighbours such as Valencia, Granada and Ibiza can be linked for tours of several days.
