Why this trip
The Siq is a beginning that changes everything: between rock walls rising up to 80 metres, you walk for around one and a half kilometres through a gorge before the Treasury reveals itself. Petra is therefore a place for hikers, not for coach tourists. The city of the Nabataeans spreads over many kilometres, and anyone who experiences it climbs steps, paths and rock ramps. The ascent to the Monastery Ad Deir is the stage that demands fitness: around 800 steps in the rock, with a view over the valley.
The High Place of Sacrifice and the Royal Tombs offer further paths with a view of sandstone in pink, orange and brown. If you start early, you have the paths to yourself.
