Why this trip
Porto has steps, and plenty of them. Anyone who climbs from the bank of the Douro up into the Ribeira quickly notices that the city demands fitness. The Torre dos Clérigos, a baroque bell tower of 76 metres, offers via a spiral staircase a view over rooftops and river, a small climbing programme in the middle of the city. It becomes calmer in the gardens: the Jardim do Morro, the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and the Jardim do Passeio Alegre offer paths with a view of river and Atlantic.
If you continue at the mouth of the Douro, you reach beaches with wooden boardwalks and strong swell. Behind the city the Douro Valley begins with vine terraces that can be explored on foot and by bicycle.
