Why this trip
Salzburg is associated with music, but around the city there are mountains that offer a different programme. The Untersberg is the local mountain: with the Untersbergbahn you reach the top station and from there paths over limestone rock with a view of city and Alps. That is half a day with manageable ascent and plenty of panorama. In the city itself the climb to the fortress and a walk through the Mirabell Gardens are worthwhile.
The Haus der Natur shows wildlife and the Alps for a day in bad weather. South of the city lie Hallein and the Dürrnberg, a small area with hiking trails, snowshoe routes and a mining history that has shaped the region. The season lasts from May to October.
