Why this trip

Blue lanes and the mountains behind them: Chefchaouen lies in the Rif Mountains, and the medina passes without transition into forest and rock. If you set out in the morning, after an hour you are on your way between holm oaks and rock faces. The best-known tour leads to Akchour. The path follows a river with mossy boulders and ends at a gorge with a waterfall, and there is also the natural bridge God's Bridge, a rock arch above the valley.

The route demands sure-footedness, a few metres of ascent and good footwear, but can be done in one day by experienced hikers. In the evening there is time for the medina and a viewpoint. Before the hike it is worth packing water, snacks and sturdy footwear, because on the way there are only few opportunities to shop. If you start early, you have the gorge almost to yourself and are back in town in the afternoon, where the lanes are especially beautiful in the evening light.

From October to April the weather is pleasant, though in winter it is cool and rainy. Fez, Casablanca and Marrakech can be reached overland as neighbours, and cash is important on the way. How you distribute hiking days and city days is something you discuss in the video call.
