Why this trip
The city wall of Dubrovnik is around two kilometres long, and the walk along it is the first stage for anyone who wants to be active here. Steps, towers and views over rooftops and the Adriatic challenge legs and head for heights at once. If you start early, you have calm and cooler air. Afterwards the view from the local mountain is worthwhile, reached by cable car or a hiking path, as is the crossing to the island of Lokrum with paths and swimming coves.
The Krka National Park with waterfalls lies within reach as a day trip, and a kayak tour at sunset gives the evening a form of its own. The wall is hardly recommended in the midday heat, the early morning or late afternoon is better, when the light is soft. Take water with you and wear a hat, because on the walk there is hardly any shade and the stones store heat. May to June and September to October are the best months, in high summer the old town is crowded and hot.
