Why this trip
Anyone who knows Hvar only as a party island has not yet seen the hill. Directly above the harbour rises the Španjola fortress, and the climb up is worthwhile before breakfast, when the steps are still empty. From the top the old town, the Pakleni Islands and the open sea lie before you, a good start for understanding the island as an active destination too. The island is long and narrow, with a limestone ridge over which old paths lead between lavender fields, holm oaks and villages.
Added to this are coves that are better reached by sea kayak than by car. Plan the stages short and the water long, because movement in the sea is part of Hvar. The quieter months are May and June as well as September and October, with pleasant temperatures and less activity in the harbour. From Switzerland the flight time is approx.
1.5 hrs, and you can enter visa-free in the Schengen area. Neighbours are Split and Dubrovnik, should you wish to link the island with the mainland.
