Why this trip
In the harbour of Chania, where Venetian buildings meet turquoise water, a group after dinner has little desire to leave the table. Crete is large enough to fill several days, and Chania makes a good base. During the day there is snorkelling in small bays, an excursion leads into the old town of Kydonia, and the Maritime Museum of Crete tells of the island's seafaring. If you like history, visit the memorial to the German paratroopers of the Battle of Crete in 1941, a serious place for a quieter moment.
In the evening the lanes of the old town stay lively, with tavernas and bars that also set out larger tables. Rethymnon, Santorini, Paros and Naxos are neighbours by ferry or flight. The flight from Switzerland takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The group travels best from May to June or in September and October.
